The surgeon slices knowledge with a knife,

cuts where the scalp enfolds the face like hair,

saws the shell of skull, then lays the brain bare

seeking in dead flesh the sources of life.

Alive to his own darkness he's aware

a corpse cannot give up its secret twice

but still he probes the long-vacated place

knowing no why or how, but only where.

 

The Egyptians, when embalming, replaced

the other organs yet dredged the head's dome

with hooks to clear it of the jellied mess.

The heart was held to be the spirit's home.

But we know better - that this wet, grey paste

is where we live-yet still we feel homeless.

Graham High is a widely published poet with eight chapbooks and collections to date. He is involved with other forms of writing, including haiku and haibun and was president of the British Haiku Society for four years. He also edited Blithe Spirit, the BHS Journal from 2005 to 2008. He established a small poetry press, ‘Ram Publications’ in 2003 and has published 40 or so little volumes of other writers’ work. He has also been involved in occasional editing and translation work. Apart from poetry Graham has engaged with short story writing and also award–winning screenplays. Apart from his writing activities Graham is a member of the Royal Society of British sculptors and has had a high profile career as an Animatronic Model Designer in the feature film industry.
