I brood on the uselessness of letters.
—Du Fu, translated by Kenneth Rexroth
Lit paper shreds drift
and fade above the dying fire.
Darkness unfurls its wings, sinks
talons into the frosted field.
A dormant volcano, looming
over the skyline, glows
with moonlit snowcap. No wind.
Dried wild carrot seed-cradles
capture white flakes
floating down like ash.
