My mother-in-law
finds seventeen ways
to squeeze mention of him
into an hour's conversation
when we visit in her kitchen
for lemonade and forkfuls
of raspberry crisp
Giddy as a schoolgirl
who just got asked
to go steady by the boy
she's long had a crush on
his name a melody the breeze
carries through the screen
sweet as summer itself
Marriage Proposal by Shoshauna Shy | Pink Peony Poetry Reed Diffuser Set
Shoshauna Shy lives in the Midwestern United States. She is the founder of the Poetry Jumps Off the Shelf program, which seeks to bring poems out of the libraries and classrooms into the public arena. Her poems have been made into videos, graced the interior of taxi cabs, coated coffee can labels, java jackets and bicycle decals, and even decorated the hind quarters of city buses. Not a monogamous writer, she works on 7-11 poems at the same time, and has books published by five different presses. She is also a flash fiction author— but that's a whole ‘nother story!
