The submarine cannot sail
through a frozen lake
in an underground cave.
The pilot peeks from the tower,
climbs onto the steel,
pirouettes across the ice,
stopping at the rock.
A bearded man squats
on an outcropping,
brandishing a burly branch
above his rival below.
The winner takes a
hibernating vessel,
stuck to the surface,
interior lights starting to dim.
When the fragrance of spring
thaws the ice,
will anyone be there
to greet the machine?
