We wore coats and caps
on the ferry deck, felt
the bone-chilling wind
troubling the dark choppy lake.
It was cold as a fish's mouth,
cold as the ship's steel plates,
cold as the black water breaking
against the boat's prow.
We shivered against each other,
and found no rest.
