The heaviness of one thing
carried out completely
in tiger or grizzly,
such a heaviness
impossible to fathom now
in human form.
Maybe once—maybe
we roamed
with what today
we might consider
the unsophisticated
heaviness of tiger or grizzly,
but O how we should long,
open our arms and long,
long for such a thing
to descend once more, return.

Joe De Quattro is an American fiction writer. The pilot episode, "Bastard Out of California", to his television series SIXTY FINGERS recently was selected to the Capital Fund Screenplay competition's Hot 100 List, and his short story, "Following Calvino", published in Italian Americana, was selected for their Recommended Reading Series. His fiction has been published widely and has received nominations for The Best American Short Stories and a Pushcart Prize. He has an MFA in Fiction from Bennington College.
