"Word Painting (for Yoko Ono)" was written in Strawberry Fields in Central Park, NYC. Looking up at The Dakota — the gothic apartment building where Yoko’s husband, John Lennon, had been murdered — Ian saw Yoko staring out of a window. Having recently read about rituals of ephemeral sand paintings, he was inspired, then and there, to write this poem for Yoko. “Word Painting" was first published in Private Parts: The Early Works of Ian Ayres. The accompanying photo of Ian and Yoko, from his book A Kiss for Yoko Ono, was taken by Eric Ellena during Yoko's final performance of Cut Piece that took place in Paris.
